Mental Illness is something I am passionate about because it's something I struggle with as a result of past trauma and abuse. A lot of people have heard of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress syndrome but may not know what all the symptoms of each feel like.
I created this short film as a way to describe one particular symptom I have struggled with as a way to show what experiencing it is like.
While the story itself is fictional the symptoms the character Adia has are not. They are a direct representation of what it feels like to 'Dissociate'. Something many people with mental illness experience but have difficulty putting into words.
Many people describe dissociation as feeling like you are in a dream or watching yourself in a movie. I took those descriptions and incorporated them into this story.
The story follows the character Adia who suffers from PTSD and dissociates almost all of the time.
I hope this film sheds some light on what rarely discussed symptoms and conditions like dissociation feels like and how that can present itself in the most mundane moments.
